If this all fails, it would be still possible to use VMs to run DOS semi-natively. As in: DOS can still run "natively" on a virtualized x86 processor, but the rest of the PC environment is emulated/mapped. One can imagine a specialized Linux distro with nothing but QEMU (or something similar) on it …

64-bit XP may sound interesting, but it's like the worst of both worlds: you loose most of XP's advantage in compatibility with legacy stuff, but at the same time it's still just XP (sort of...) so you can't run modern software anyways (and expect problems with hardware drivers too).
