Yep I found out in the end that it was because of approximations (I found the formula in the hardware programming manual like you said).

Because it's not trivial to implement. We're talking low-level hardware interraction through x86 assembler here. I'm not the correct dude for implementing new big things like that.

As pointed out already you're really overestimating the Pentium 1 MMX here. Just because a game "runs on MMX" doesn't mean it runs fine on a Pentium 1 MMX. Newer CPUs have MMX too, so that's probably what you are referring to. There are too many bottlenecks in this system to ever play GTA 3 or NFS …

I don't know of a specific way, but for Cirrus Logic it seems that the hardware BitBLT routine is present in GD5426 and later according to Wikipedia. I'd ultimately go for a VLB (VESA Local Bus), should be much faster.

DX4-100 is already pretty good for a 486. I'd go for a GD5429 VLB if you can find one for cheap. Being patient pays off when it comes to getting a nice retro rig. Finding one that is maxed out at 2MB VRAM (all chips present) is a nice bonus.

That's an old chipset. I'd go for a later Cirrus Logic VLB card (f.ex. GD5428) if you want a good price/performance ratio for GUI acceleration. The CPU is also utilized in GUI rendering, so upgrading that might help too.

It's most likely a memory expansion interface. You can see traces from it snake its way to the SIMM slots. Looks like it's compatible as a normal 16-bit ISA slot too, since you see the left side of the 16-bit connector being tied up with the ISA bus.

It's possible that the head is stuck, and thus the coil acts as a crude speaker. Some HDDs probably have a speaker that annoys you when the start-up diagnostics failed, though...
