A.) They thought they were going to get a dual core 386 (sad face when they turned it on) B.) Just put it in there for safe storage so the pins wouldn't get bent Option B is my theory anyway.

If it was that big in the 80s it was most definitely a rear projection TV and they were known to have a "fuzzy" image. There were many manufacturers of rear projection TVs in the 80s so hard to say from your description.
