Re: Intel CPU design flaw - Kernel-memory-leaking

Re speculative execution, I guess we know now :P https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4072698/windows-server-guidance-to-protect-against-the-speculative-execution So that website says this: In addition to installing the January security update, a processor microcode update is required. This …

Re: Intel CPU design flaw - Kernel-memory-leaking

Yeah Spectre affects ALL CPUs (including ARM) since 1995. If read descriptions that is a SCARY one. Side effects for speculative execution? Damn, why did no-one think that is a bad idea? https://tech.slashdot.org/story/18/01/04/0524234/google-says-almost-all-cpus-since-1995-vulnerable-to-meltdown- …

Re: How to slow down real-time

Another idea (to think outside the box so to speak) is rather than slow down the emulator, slow down the host machine. This way the emulator will not be able to keep up. It is inconvenient as it requires a reboot but it can work.

Re: How to slow down real-time

Yeah, you would think such a simple thing as slowing down (or even speeding up) would be a no brainer once you have emulators. But in our quests as emulator writers to pursue perfection we did not have time to add such a feature. To answer your question, Superfury put it all right. However for most …

Re: Which programming language?

16-bit compilers however have stopped development in the early 90s, so most tools never evolved beyond what you would use in the era of the 486. The only 'modern' 16-bit compiler I know of is OpenWatcom. That is true, however I did a bit of research and it seems you can squeeze (although maybe not …

Re: Merry f'ing :-D christmass 2017 everyone :-) :-) :-)

Anyone else have a project / retro present from Santa to keep them busy? Merry Winter holidays to you all! I have a HP PA-RISC based machine that has NeXT installed on it. I plan to make it work. Last time I tried there was a problem with a PS/2 mouse. I am also moving so all my collection will …

Re: Ebay thread goodbye thread

I'm quite pessimistic about IP ban. Masking your IP is not that difficult . Come on, I did it several times ... Are there still technical folks of our proficiency who don't use a VPN and/or Tor? If you live in a five-eyes country, didn't pay attention to Snowden, and don't use a VPN, well I just …

Re: Ebay thread goodbye thread

I personally don't like vcfed as much because there was (not sure if it's still there anymore) a snobbish sentiment of what constitutes 'vintage'. It is not snobbish. You just happen to not agree with it, that does not make it snobbish. I happen to agree with them that Pentium 4 is NOT vintage, …
