Just to quickly confirm what JayCeeBee64 said earlier: the reason Unreal reverted back to software renderer is because it could not create a device with Z-buffer support. Getting a 3Dfx Voodoo seems period appropriate. I will still be able to use the ATI Rage as the 2D card.

Scali, you mean not all registers are read only during horizontal or vertical retrace? Some of them are read during the scanline drawing too? I did not know that.That makes the emulation slightly more complicated. Vlad.

If the rendering thread is read only it won't impact the CPU emulation however the other way around is not always true as you might be in a middle of a write from CPU when you are reading memory so stuff might appear corrupted on the screen for one frame or so. One thing to keep in mind too is …

That is interesting actually. It basically gives you one extra segment worth in real mode if you have A20 capable processor because of the carry bit. Very neat!

PPI is just another name for the Intel 8255 chip. The ports are here: http://bochs.sourceforge.net/techspec/PORTS.LST. You only need to implement 0x60-0x63. Also check out PCEm's implementation of the 8255/PPI chip (for XT, they have a separate one for PCJr).
