Use a modern SATA drive? Loud and proud is kind-of the nature of the beast. I doubt there's much you can do beyond physically isolating the drive from your ears.

0.74 is quite out of date. Use 0.74-2 or a newish SVN instead, or go with ECE if you like YP's patch choice. You could wrap it into your own extension.
