i found that a P100 really offered no additional performance options that I didn't have with an MMX. Having a 1.5x multiplier wasn't beneficial.

ALS chips were one of the few options for SB16 clones. They should be fairly cheap where available (maybe less than a movie ticket), so I'd probably just buy one if I was interested.

CRC is often what's used to detect corruption. Of course, this has no capability of repair so redundant data needs to then be added.

The Delta probably has a 110w limit on the 5V and 3.3V rails combined. This would be fine for a basic P3 without a huge stack of drives or peripherals. The biggest problem will be if the transistors don't fail. An out of control PSU can potentially deliver huge amounts of energy to your components …

The original battery is non rechargeable so there should be no back feeding current. You can check for a forward diode drop between positive and negative on the battery header with high impedance in reverse.
