Correct, but some boards have a linear voltage regulator that can not handle the power that a v3 3000 needs (the lower clocked 2000 version might be on the edge). These boards can get defective or kill the card (or both). So if in doubt always check. The same thing happened to some 440LX boards, …

The same method can be used for flashing BIOS EEPROMs. It's just a matter of using the right image when you flash, then you can pop the chip into the BIOS socket on the board you're fixing.

I really like the performance of horn loaded drivers. I haven't tried Klipsch hardware, but I like JBL. I hope to do a build using JBL/Selenium horns paired in a two way configuration once time allows.

The BIOS is a DIP package, so hot flashing on another motherboard (or potentially a network card) should work fine.

Presumably new ones do have wear leveling, but modern spindle drives are such a step up in performance that i don't see much advantage in using CF.

I'd advise against using CF for operating systems which use virtual memory. The most straightforward approach these days is to use a Seagate or Samsung SATA drive with a converter and size limit it.
