You can always leverage titles with built in benchmarks. It won't be universal, but you can still test all three major APIs.

The CT3930 is a good match for a Win95/98 machine. If that's what you're going to run, go for it. Otherwise you might want to look at one of the SB16s, or even one of the clones. The EMU8k chip didn't have great support amongst DOS titles especially compared to something like the GUS.

Does the VIA board have onboard audio? Have you disabled it? Windows may be emulating a soundblaster using the onboard audio and using that preferentially over the SB16. Also, I recommend restarting in DOS mode when running DOS games.

After the PXElinux menu? If so, test that you can mount the image on loopback in Linux. Also, try removing the geometry information in the PXElinux config file. The floppy keyword must remain, however.

An R 9800 Pro will easily saturate a P3. This card belongs in a high clock Northwood or Barton setup, minimum.

thanks for the input, are these adapters already in the computers or would i have buy them? Slocket adapters are somewhat uncommon and kind of expensive. It is very unlikely you already have them in your computers. But if you are only interested in older software, you will probably be just fine …

Looks okay to me. FSP is a good brand, as well. Not the best, but generally they don't ship with major design flaws and safety hazards, and they're not overrated like crazy in their capabilities.
