OPL4 was a wavetable chip (with OPL3 built in as well). Most SB cards were similar to each other, except for the transition from dual OPL2 based SB Pro 1.0 cards to OPL3 based FM. Even so, only a few titles made use of the extended feature set of the SB Pro 1.0.

Most of those are Windows games 😀 Anyway, Athlon XP-M CPUs have to be unlocked so they can throttle. You can take advantage of that to tune your system as necessary. Alternately, all K8 CPUs allow downclocking by multiplier. so a S754/AGP system might work very well.

I doubt you'll find many Win32 titles that are highly speed sensitive. If you're worried, get an XP-M and downclock it as necessary.

I tend to ignore motherboard manuals and pay attention to driver documentation when it comes to software support :) If the motherboard you go with has a 4 or 8 pin 12V connector, it's almost guaranteed to drive the CPU using VRMs from the 12V rail. The NEC let's you run a separate ground wire when retrofitting. If the local building code allows it, what you're proposing will likely be similar to what they do (just more permanent).

KT600 or KT880 were competitive with NVidia, but there's no problem with NForce2 and Win98. I was thinking of 754, 939, and AM2.

Well, as far as driver longevity, I think your best option is to go Taiwanese and buy a VIA board. The only loss you suffer is SLI which I think should be used with a newer XP/7 build anyway.

I believe AM2 K8T890 boards have drivers for Windows 98.
