On Linux (or Windows), CDRDAO can extract subchannel information with the right drive.

Exactly, it's easiest to use a bootloader which can cloak partitions. I'd much rather just cold swap drives than mess around with that.

There's a BIG difference in the FPGA firmware chops required to create a core for the ZX spectrum vs a 1990 era PC. Even creating a CGA/EGA/VGA video core would be a massive job. The timing requirements and logic complexity is just a whole 'nother level.

With so few players in the x86 CPU market, I'm not sure what you propose using. Vortex86 is one of the few which may, possibly be not so heavily cache dependent like almost any other current production CPU.

Something like a POD 200MMX would give you a useful performance boost down the road, if required. Nothing wrong with it as is, though.

Instead of multi boot, you can also use converters and SATA bays. I don't like having DOS and Win95/98 share drives. I know it can be made to work, but it's too much of a hassle for me.

I tended to avoid due to weird memory addressing problems with Grub at the time. LILO worked okay, though.

Win98SE FDISK can definitely be buggy with large disks. Have you tried the FDISK replacement from FreeDOS?

I'd suspect a driver issue. GF4MX is similar in terms of technology to the GF2 as both support a DX7 feature level.

The P3 is less thermally constrained, so it's easier to work with IMO. Good Intel chipsets like the i815 and 440BX are a more stable platform than anything for the socket A, but VIA vs VIA is a wash for chipsets as is Athlon vs P3 for CPUs, as long as you provide proper cooling.
