But why didn't they think about the games that already use the high-speed mode is a mystery. The SBPro 1.0 was introduced in May 1991 and the SB16 in June 1992, but the SBPro 2.0 was also introduced in 1992 and continued selling along with the SB16 well into the 90s. At stock clocks, I would expect higher clock CPUs like the 5x86 to hit limits due to the FSB. Generalized Amdahl's law at work.

S7 is older than boards that do 2.0-2.2 volts; they go as old as 3.3 volts, and some of these boards fail to post K6-2s with the latest BIOS and S7 interposers ... S7 can not do K6-II. For that you need SS7. SS7 on the other hand, can do K6-II, K6-III, P166MMX and a lot of other CPU's. My apologies for contradicting you, but this is incorrect. S7 can do K6-2.
