You mean Windows GM emulation sounds like shit. Use a good midi engine and GM/GS/XG patch set to provide midi for DOSBOX and you should be happy. Having said that, Phil likes his S1 and the comparison with an SC55 and MU80 sounded pretty solid, so I think you've invested in a pretty good product.

There may be second source manufacturers for the part, but they should all be electrically and mechanically compatible. The only option I've found are three pin to-220 packages, 5V 3A output DC.

An op-amp based unity gain mixer would be an inexpensive and relatively easy upgrade. It would definitely give you more ideal behavior in terms of impedances.
