xp might be slow on this, but maybe the iscsi magic will handle; can You describe the iscsi solution in some more detail? both client and server, please i understand it would hold your windows profile?

can You measure performance? how slow is it? i understand that its mostly lpt that causes overhead? some advanced modes for lpt allow use of dma iirc

i'm not sure 640kB is even nearly close to what a simple vnc implementation might require; You have to have a copy of the entire screen at all times; i also wonder how much time such a machine would require to pull an entire picture from network

maybe check how the sound is configured in the dosbox install coming with the game? also there might be some readme in there saying how to select sound (it might be switch instead of a config)
