the g450 was quite a decent card afair, if 3d mark fares badly with it, that would mean those marks are not worth much at all..

didnt dosbox have some slow stepping mode? or was that bochs maybe? simics certainly does but its commercial i wouldnt even know if it can be had still regarding the debuggin: i believe theres another problem: after the switch the code that actually outputs the values in registers etc might not work …

im relatively certain that you cannot view in debug a transition from real to prot mode; i can tell you that for me it was the GDT definition that caused the most trouble - copying sample GDT from wiki might help?

vnc is the fastest solution, sometimes it requires a driver to get the data fast/with low cpu usage but then it just easily works on a 100mbit line without compression; the lan card better be somewhat efficient;

not very retro but: forgot to attach auxiliary power cable on my athlon/barton mobo; ran till it died - psu, mobo, cpu - partially stuff went even black; also: detached hard disk that was still powered :>
