My first was a black-and-white 3Com Palm III circa 2000. Still runs well. It had Palm OS 3.x when it came to me but now runs 4.1. I even got the modem for it. The 'Graffiti' writing system became second nature, though I haven't used it for years now. (The Palm smartphones have keyboards.)

Backups are a problem once you start to accumulate large amounts of stuff. I've always used optical disks since they're cheap and reliable, but you need so many that it becomes an annoyance to store them. People recommend USB hard drives, but they make me nervous - drop one and all your data is gone …

I had a T450 and T500 years ago and did the exact same thing to them. 1.4 GHz / 768 MB is the top max these boards can handle. They were running XP though. eta: I also benchmarked them with a GeForce4 MX440 64MB AGP : 3DMark 2000: 4463 3DMark 2001SE: 2845 PCMark 2002: 3006 CPU 1154 MEM

Hello all, I was going through a stack of old 5.25" floppies yesterday and found this: IBM PC Diagnostics Version 2.02 1502212 It's a 160 KB disk dated 1983. I assume this is for the original IBM PC. Is this something rare? Would it be considered 'warez' to make a copy of it available online?

I used one of these adapters to connect an old Compaq KB-9860 keyboard to a new wide screen TV. This keyboard has a 2m cable so you can control the TV from the sofa. (It's mainly used to search up Youtube videos.)

That's cute. I didn't know you could mix and match CPUs that way. I've attached a picture of my similar setup from back in the day. (I used the remote console feature of the Remote Management Card to capture the screenshot.)

It would be nice to have USB mouse support in DOS. Once you get used to an optical mouse you don't want to go back to using mechanical mice.

Old systems are flaky and fragile and once they work "well enough" you should leave them alone. The urge to constantly change things is more trouble than it's worth.

Overheating causes seemingly unrelated system-wide problems that can be hard to pin down. Jerky video, memory errors, random blue screens and reboots.

I loved my Palm TX but having to carry it around in addition to a phone just became too annoying. I switched to a Palm Centro, which I'm still using. I still miss the big screen of the TX though.
