Me thinks it is more complicated then that, as the dream 4MB patch set did not entirely vanish after the lawsuit (1997). Also there is not really one Dream set of 4MB, there are several variants. see: Midi: Dream and Topwave-32 samplesets

I measured the cable connections, none of the wires seem directly connected to the Coax S/PDIF. Only one pin was connected to ground. See Image

I have that connector-cable at home. Will look into it when I find the time. In windows the S/PDIF works well. In pure Dos it did not give any sound, but I don't know wheter it was because of the Vortex-2 on the receiving end or the Yamaha card as the source.

Indeed, I remember in the '90s there was a lot more reason to upgrade a PC system every few years. Both the software and the hardware became obviously more practical. Compared to that; Currently at home and at work there is very little reason to replace software and hardware from around 2004.

The best Warcraft II music experience is taking the original midi tracks and playing them on a Roland SoundCanvas or similar. To bad they changed from Midi to pre-recorded music on the Battle.net edition. As it degrades quality and increases size.
