Re: Is Vista now Retro

Another reason Vista seemed slow to a lot of people is because they upgraded their XP systems, and the system specs were fine for XP, but on the low end for Vista. And Vista drivers took awhile to mature. By then, people already formed their opinions.

Re: Pronunciation of Riva

Like I was saying Lie-nux for years because when I read it was named after a guy called LinusI had only heard that name from Snoopy. I heard other people calling it Lin-ux and thought "why would you pronounce it that way??". Then I learned Mr Torvalds was Finnish... LOL...same here. Then there's …

Re: What game are you playing now?

@badmojo: I actually started Albion once last year, and got down to the planet (maybe 2-3 hrs into the game). I like turn-based combat, but the 1st person movement in the game wasn't my favorite. It's not as 3D feeling as Ultima Underworld, and things like turning corners were very confusing. I'd …

Bah. Got stuck on Eye of the Beholder on level 6. It wasn't so great that I'm willing to backtrack. I think I'm picking a new game... Obvious choice is Baldur's Gate II, but I kind of wanted to spend some time in real DOS, so I'm considering Anvil of Dawn and Albion.

Re: Old Windows and modern malware

The only practical way malware can get into your network from the internet is: a) you let it in by clicking a link b) you're not running behind a router Routers (even without firewall abilities) use network address translation to drop unsolicited inbound traffic. That's why so many PCs were infected …

Re: Pronunciation of Riva

I think what happens with people in general is that we read things to ourselves in text which are almost never said aloud, or are only spoken among a small circle of friends. As a result, we get very comfortable with our own imagined pronunciation, and never hear anything to contradict it. Then …

Re: Pronunciation of Riva

There are a few others that I say one way, and have heard another way - Tseng: -I always said Tee-seng but hear others say Tseng (pronouncing the first consonant almost like a parent scolding a child with a"Tsk"). Even though I*'m pretty sure my way is wrong, I feel like I need to enunciate the …

Down to level 5 of Eye of the Beholder. Reminds me a bit of Lands of Lore (the dungeon portions). A bit simpler, and I'm really annoyed at the lack of even FM music, but it's fun enough that I'll keep going. Only a week to get to level 5, so I should hopefully finish the game (it's got 12 levels) in …

Re: Anyone falls victim to WannaCry ransomware?

Wait, so all it does is change group policy settings and Software restriction policies, basic file/folder monitoring and black lists PUP? Why would one need this? You can do all this without any app with what's provided within windows. Sound more like a lazy way out to me but If it does what's it …

Never trust a 3'rd party security tool you haven't proven to work as intended. Not saying it doesn't help. But I have a hard time putting blind trust into anything AV or anti malware. Malware is always evolving and I don't trust AV or anti malware to keep on top of it for me. You should read up on …
