The 9800 is a little bit "overpowered" to a descent 1Ghz Thunderbird ? Board + cpu are from 2000 , the 9800 is from 2003. 3 years during that time is like 9 years today ??? Personally i would combine this card to a cpu like Athlon XP or P4 with 2Ghz+

For your first example, the athlon 1800+ , i would go with a soundblaster live or Audigy. Then you have EAX. With two ISA slots, you can use a second sound card for your 2nd retro PC with pentium 2 cpu. An OPL3 compatible card would be nice.

A Abit chipset heatsink on a MSI board, 😀 Anyway, most important thing is: keep your 9700 cool... The Ati 's 9700 (pro) are prone to fail due to heat problems. I had also a 9700 like yours, and i have made the wrong decision to overclock... it's life wasn't so long 🙁

About this VGA card: I have never seen this design on geforce 6600 GT. It is really a GT ? Searching on Sparkle geforce 6600 GT, the cooler design is different. If it is a 6600 GT , then it shall have VGA ram chip's with square design ... This looks like DDR or (G)DDR2 ram...
