Fascinating. Interesting that the FSB bottleneck at high mult is significant enough that the cache reduction makes that big a difference.

With Slot 1 it should be pretty easy to try both and check. That's one of a small number of reasons I do like the slotted form factor. Cooler comes away with the cpu, no need to fool around with coolers or thermal paste when you swap as long as both still have coolers.

1GHz celeron w/100MHz FSB is extremely likely to slap around a 750MHz PIII w/100MHz FSB for games. Having twice the cache will not save the PIII from the fact it's only running at 75% of the clock speed of the celeron.

EMS can be nice for some things. A 386 can simulate it through EMM386, but hardware EMS is always faster. Games that require it: https://www.vogonswiki.com/index.php/List_of_programs_that_require_EMS I believe Wolf3d can use EMS, but I'm not sure if it matters as long as you have enough XMS for it …

Memory expansion card may be an EMS card. If so, the RAM on it wouldn't be counted at startup, just by programs that used it.

There are 8088 systems with SRAM already, the IBM 5140 Convertible used it. That said, I would love to see what a V20/V30 system would look like when pushed to the limit with SRAM and frequency increase.
