The advantage of using a Win 3.x or Win 9x-based sequencer is that you can make Windows output the MIDI information to your computer's internal sound card via the appropriate driver.

Have you tried both MIDI IN ports? It is possible to disable one of the ports in the SC-55 settings, and then the SC-55 will ignore that port. Also, make sure the volume is not muted for each of the instruments and/or MIDI channels...

Be sure to secure the base of that thing to your workbench before mounting the camera, those can get quite top-heavy...although I suspect that most modern kits will be lighter than the old contraptions.

Of course, the inverse is also possible: FM commands to General MIDI. You just have to look at the large amount of complaining about the AudioPCI's (and related) "FM" ability to understand that it's not flawless. 🤣

In the case of playback on a OPL device, yes, there would be a difference in how it sounds, because FM synthesis is different from the synthesis used in General MIDI devices (which is usually PCM sample-based).
