I remember seeing those cases in the TigerDirect catalog. I understand nostalgia but man they were ugly. I guess that's why they are so hard to find now.

I had those Cambridge speakers back in the day and I thought they sounded good. But most "computer" speakers are garbage so it's a low bar.

The BIOS determines the memory size by writing patterns and attempting to read it back. Once the read no longer matches the write (or the 640K limit is reached), it stops counting and that's your memory size.

I'd love to own an Amiga one day. I probably never will though, as I they're the *SINGLE* kind of computer that I never see for sale locally. Not even 15 years ago, when C64s, IIGSs, PS/2s, and frickin PCs with Voodoo3s in them could regularly be had for $10 at garage sales. And as for eBay...heh …

That style switch is fully insulated and designed to be mounted directly to the chassis. The PSU is also grounded to the case, so if there was a short the fuse would blow.

I've had three CRTs fail but only one was completely dead. The other two have image problems which I think can be repaired but it's beyond my current skill level. I've also thought about putting LCDs in the monitor case. Not the same of course but it maintains the overall aesthetic.

Most of my stuff is from the 80s and 90s but I don't worry about wearing anything out. There's no point in having something if you aren't going to use it. I guess I'm lucky because the only component failures I've had are CRTs, mechanical parts, batteries and capacitors. I have loads of spare drives …

The ASP/CSP chip is CT1748 but you'll probably have better luck finding an SB16 with it already installed. It's used by TFX for surround sound and that's about it. http://dosdays.co.uk/topics/sb16.php

I'm not an expert on Sound Blasters but I've never seen one with a sideways wavetable header. Or without a CT model number. So I'm thinking clone.

You may have to change Front Panel Type in your BIOS setup to either HD or AC97 depending on what the bracket implements. I suspect AC97 but it doesn't say.

I still recommend trying to blow out the speaker jack in case there is debris in there. If your jack is damaged or has a bad solder joint, you can use the front panel audio connector (AAFP) on your motherboard with a bracket like this.

Turn your computer on, unplug the speakers, then plug them into the mic jack. You should get a prompt asking what you just plugged in. Select headphone or front speaker out.
