Re: Duke 3D (on Win98) GM vs AWE32

I have mpu-401 emulation checked and awe32 is set as my midi device in control panel -> multimedia but duke 3d (i also tested atomic edition) would simply give me an mpu401 not detected error. I'll test it out again in DOS mode but if i remember correctly you can't use large sound fonts without …

Re: Duke 3D (on Win98) GM vs AWE32

The AWE32 midi option in DOS games makes the game use the presets for the 1MB ROM soundset. (There are very few games that load some custom samples.) Ah yes I understand, I think Final Fantasy VII loads in it's own sound font (though that's a 9x example). Do you know if Duke 3d should play General …

Duke 3D (on Win98) GM vs AWE32

SOLVED - Except I'm not sure what solved it :blah: Couple of questions... Not sure if this belongs in sound or here. Edit: This is a Win98 system with an Awe32 (Technically SB32 CT3600, but that should not affect midi), not dosbox. I have the Duke 3d .MID files and they sound great with the …

Re: Best Games (PCGamer)

Doom II wasn't as big of a influential splash as Doom though. Doom II only added a few things and cemented itself into retail where Doom didn't.. Going a tad off the thread path here, but to reply: I should elaborate. I consider Doom 2 to be an expansion to Doom and usually include Doom 1 as the …

Re: Best Games (PCGamer)

Meh, whatever. The list contains plenty of good games. Doom II at ~76 makes me cringe though  .. I still happen to think of Doom II as the most high octane and fun shooter of all time and it still stands up that way compared to any modern game. Also how can they go that far back and not even …

Re: Is AWE32 Memory Upgrade required?

AWEsome, thanks guys. I decided that for the AUD$32.80 including shipping for 32mb on Amazon isn't going to break the bank. Going to get them anyway and chuck them in to complete the experience for Windows. A fine choice! I didn't want to push it too hard on you, but you already have an Awe32, …

Re: Is AWE32 Memory Upgrade required?

If you're using a separate midi device you won't be missing anything at all with the awe32. You're basically just going to be using it as a sound blaster 16 (OPL3) with a separate midi device. There are some awesome sound banks though if you ever feel like playing with the Awes midi capabilities. …

Re: Getting around that soundcard mess

I think this thread scared the OP right off. Not that I dislike the dialogue. I just got the old school game bug back about a year ago, and honestly I'm willing to bet most of the games he has in mind are the standard Sierra, ID, etc because that's how I felt and most fresh blood think that way too. …

Re: Awe 32 card measurements/dimensions

My ct3990 card is about 13 inches long. I think a ct3990 will be too long for that 13.5" case. Well 13" would fit in a 13.5 inch space :-P, that's why I'm asking for somebody to pull out a tape measure (if it's not a big hassle). The case is 15.5" long. I'm measuring from the start of an ISA PCB to …

Awe 32 card measurements/dimensions

I'm curious AWE32 owners, if there is any variation in the length between different models of the awe32 WITH simm memory expansions? According to wikipedia, the awe32 is 356mm (14.xx inches). My newly acquired case measures just over 13.5" (~345mm) from the start of an isa PCB to the front of the …
