Re: Vintage Altec Lansing speakers

Yeah, I'm probably going the way of a receiver and some bookshelf speakers. Have my eye on the Marantz NR1506 and some Polks. I've only owned one set of Polk speakers, a very entry level set, R30, which if I remember correctly was their absolute cheapest tower speaker around 10 or so years ago. I …

Re: Vintage Altec Lansing speakers

I literally never heard a single set of computer speakers in the 90s that impressed me. I also haven't heard any since, including Klipsch Promedia THX which other people loved (for some reason) say 10-15 years ago, and some still do. I don't say these things to troll the thread or anything but I …

Re: Help needed identifying ISA Sound Card

Wait, the card in picture says 'ES1868', so it is also an ESS Audiodrive. You decide if you want another one. lol are you the first person in this thread to notice that? I noticed several things in the board, but not that I think some of us (including myself) need to practice our "Where's Waldo" …

Re: So what makes a CRT a "Good" CRT?

I've seen these scalers on youtube in action, but for some reason their picture doesn't look even close to what was seen on our old television set with its RF tuner and these big knobs on the right side. Strange, isn't it ? ;-) It's not the same, but in many cases it's the only way to get "close …

Re: So what makes a CRT a "Good" CRT?

We're getting to a point in time that lcds are now surpassing crt's in refresh rate , resolution , black levels. Aside from nostalgia and how cheap they are , crt's are finally beyond saving. Well, the CRT's main selling point was (and still is) adjustable resolution. None of the modern screens …

Re: Help needed identifying ISA Sound Card

Maybe an Addonics Sound Vision Gold (something) because they did use the Sound Vision trademark and they called some cards Gold and I can see "Gold 16k" near the back/inner portion of the card near the cd interfaces. I tried to look up some of the other identifiers like 9831 or 983 or 94v-0 but …

Re: So what makes a CRT a "Good" CRT?

I'm picky with just about everything about them. My overall favorite CRT line has been the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro series and monitors based on that like NECs. I have a 2070SB but it's in storage. I've had previous models in the same line. Unfortunately I can't remember too much about the monitors I …

Re: ET6000. Tantalum trouble.

Might actually be worth replacing all of those tantalums with electrolytics really. Probably should've said such before. They're cheap enough and shouldn't take much more time (or labor cost) to do them all. You can do the one first and then check it, do the rest if it works just to keep it working. …

Re: Nvidia 5800 Ultra vs Radeon 9800 Pro

Geforce FX was one of Nvidia's worst generations ever. They were an absolute laughing stock at the time. ATI went on to do the same thing with their 2000 series a few generations later. 9700 and 9800 were absolutely fantastic for the time for Windows games. Not as good for DOS games, less memory …

Re: ET6000. Tantalum trouble.

I wouldn't recommend it. It may work fine especially if the capacitor right next to it is in parallel (which it may or may not be; they could be on different rails). But you can damage ICs with ripple, so it's best not to try. Especially if you're using this on an old PSU that will probably have …
