Re: FastDoom. A new Doom port for DOS, optimized to be as fast as possible for 386/486 personal computers!

Hello, I'm trying the latest fast doom version, I'd like to have the vanilla status bar, I tried to use -normalstatusbar switch but it doesn't change, is it a bug or a feature? Is there a way to have the vanilla status bar on the bottom? Thanks Can you upload a screenshot? What IWAD version are you …

Re: EGA DOS benchmarks?

You're right, 640x350 is a little bit faster, but nothing crazy (about 5%, depending on the card). I'm developing a benchmark for all kinds of graphics cards (source code is available but haven't finished a release yet, https://github.com/viti95/V95bench if interested). Here are the results for a …

Re: FastDoom. A new Doom port for DOS, optimized to be as fast as possible for 386/486 personal computers!

Pretty interesting results, all comes down to how much data is transferred via ISA bus (and bus bandwidth). After analyzing your results I decided to do some testing on a fast 486 (an Overdrive DX4-100 with a fast ISA Cirrus Logic GD-5429), and observed that the CGA mode was faster than both VGA …

Re: FastDoom. A new Doom port for DOS, optimized to be as fast as possible for 386/486 personal computers!

These results seem normal to me, the ISA 8-bit bus is very slow, in my testings it can't do more than 1Mb/s. All comes down to how much data is transfered via the bus, that's why CGA is faster than EGA, and EGA faster than VGA: Hercules: 640x400, 1 bit per color, 8 pixels per byte written: 31,25kb …

Re: Question about DOS 16 color modes.

The original IBM EGA manual describes it's registers, maybe it could be useful http://minuszerodegrees.net/oa/OA%20-%20IBM%20Enhanced%20Graphics%20Adapter.pdf Also I can try those experiments with real hardware (nearly any kind of known video card), I'm very interested to test if it's possible to …

Re: Question about DOS 16 color modes.

Using EGA/VGA Write Mode 2 it's a little bit complicated, you should read this book, it explains it very well with some examples http://vtda.org/books/Computing/Programming/EGA-VGA-ProgrammersReferenceGuide2ndEd_BradleyDyckKliewer.pdf The VGA 80x200 mode is set by changing the number of scanlines to …

Re: Question about DOS 16 color modes.

With EGA cards you can write pixels to VRAM in a chunky way using Write Mode 2, BUT it's much slower than writing plane by plane (it requires a read and a write operation from the video card for each pixel). I guess the only way to do bit-packed 16 color graphics is using the text modes (VGA …

Re: EGA DOS benchmarks?

So far the only objective benchmarks suggested are the video tests from Check It and Landmark, which seem oriented towards text mode performance. Any others out there? I don't think EGA 4bpp has to be any slower than CGA 2bpp, because one of the big features of EGA graphics is the capability to …

Re: FastDoom. A new Doom port for DOS, optimized to be as fast as possible for 386/486 personal computers!

I've tested a Paradise PEGA-1A (ISA 8-bit), and it won't get more than 13.3 fps on an AMD K6-2 550. EGA cards are usually very very slow, so I guess it's a normal result. Launching the same benchmark, on a Paradise PVGA-1A (also ISA 8-bit, same EGA mode) gets better result, about 26 fps. Reducing …
