Apollo Pro 133 and onwards, even K8T890/P4M890 for LGA775, is good for Win9x with newer and stable drivers.

And the 4870x2 is slower than a 6870. I bought a couple refurb 4870x2 cards from Tigerdirect. One ended up being DOA and Visiontek allowed me to RMA both and they replaced them with a pair of 6870s. The 4870x2 "overheating" was a normal thing. Those suckers ran HOT HOT HOT. An easy temp drop besides repasting and repadding is to take the slot cover off and cut out the "grill" (air flow restrictor). Fro that matter, you don't even need to take it off to remove the grill unless you want to make …

Cleaning old cases. So much grime. Used baking soda to clean covers, looks like it works better than degreaser (it leaves strings clearer than the rest). That's because baking soda is abrasive, you are not cleaning the dirt off you are sanding it away. That means you are also losing paint and …

What happens with just a DVI to VGA dongle on the DVI port? Do the other ports work that way? Yes, if it boots with the dongle plugged in, the other ports work just fine, even after I unplug the dongle. It's almost certainly a monitor detection issue. I'd just leave the DVI/VGA dongle plugged in :)

Overheating wouldn't be much of an issue, unless it does it after it's been repasted. Then again, you'd repaste them anyways, wouldn't you? I bought a bunch of PCI-E cards.. A Radeon HD4870X2, a GTX480 and a GTX780. Untested, and belonged to seller's son, and were placed in a cupboard after upgrading. They are supposed to work. It sounds like the card always detects a monitor as being connected to the DVI port for some reason, and assigns it as main monitor output to me.
