Wait, you are trying this on a Laptop, which means you don't have a K6-2 CPU but rather a K6-2P (Mobile) CPU. SetMul does not affect L1 for these CPUs IIRC, but you can disable L2. Try that.

I just copied files onto a FAT16 formatted CF card in Windows 10. The CF Card may have been formatted using a different geometry than the LBA geometry Windows 10 detects, is my guess.

AWE Synthesis is useful in a fraction of games that a 486 can run (admittadly it is more relevant for a DX2 and onwards) and a ES1868’s ESFM is a much better ‘clone’ than an AWE64’s CQM. I tend to go for the former and use an external MIDI device (my Munt-Pi3 usually) for Socket3/5/7 DOS builds. …
