9800s are known to be failure prone, unless you're doing something very basic such as forgetting to plug in the power molex and it doesn't POST at all I wouldn't count on fixing it.

The biggest differentiator, IMO, was the period leading up to the Northwoods. So423 was a mistake. RDRAM was a mistake. It took forever for Intel to release a DDR chipset, with high-latency and expensive RDRAM and slow SDRAM as the only options. OTOH, AMD was plagued by having cowboy vendors …
