For PCI I would rate FM801>Solo-1>YMF7x4 for DOS as far as compatibility is concerned. FM synth quality is in reverse order. It really dependa on the chipset to be honest. FM801 works wonders in many hopeless situations. Vortex2 for DOS sounds so bad I wouldnt use it at all..

Keep up the great work keropi. I'm really glad you made this card. I hope people like you and LABS proliferate and there are a lot more options in the market soon. The Amiga scene is alive with dozens of modern hardware projects, let's hope retro PC scene does the same soon.

A typical MP3 file is a few megabytes. The data transfer rate required for playback is typically less than 1MB per minute. Even PIO mode 0 is faster than 1MB per second . The issue is not data read speed at all, it is FP intensive audio decoding that the 486 completely sucks ass at. Yes, but it …

As far as chipsets go, until a few months ago I would have responded with ESS ES1868, but today my answer is simple: CMI8830/A. I am a believer. That said, if we are talking about specific cards Orpheus is in a league of its own..

Thanks for the information, I dug through the patch files and MANUAL.TXT does indeed have a simple walkthrough of the steps needed. Now I can start my LGA775 build.
