Overclocked my CPU to 233 MHz and the game became 30+ fps playable with Far draw distance (not full) and everything else set to high so it has a strange CPU barrier at around 200MHz. Very strange.

I don't really think even XP is very retro considering GOG makes everything playable on it, so nah, Vista is very much as contemporary as it ever was.. IMO that is.

PII covers a 3 year period between 1997-1999; the TNT is an OK companion to a low speed PII chip like the 266 or 300 (I prefer a G200+Voodoo2 instead), but you have a 450MHz PII, and most of the games you declare interest in are 1998/99 titles. There's nothing unsafe about overclocking these. You are not really adjusting the Vcore, are you? If not, you're safe :). I don't think you're that lucky, it's just MMX clock high, I have never seen a 166 model unable to run at 200 for example! If you want to see if it is 100% stable, try crusher1. …

Final question: Does anyone know if the DOS CD versions will work with a Microsoft Sidewinder 2 (USB) under Windows 98? If they won't play nice with my joystick it might be a reason to grudgingly go for the Collector's Series..

Well I was considering trying the Win95 versions because I thought they were glide so there is little need to install them at the moment I will install the CD versions of each though lack of 640x480 or a TF engine port of XW is a shame.

Apparently I was using MiniGL 1.49, which I think is optimized for PII clas CPUs, I'll check again with 1.47 tonight - not sure if it will make a difference, but still.. I'll also try overclocking the CPU via multiplier first, FSB second.
