Re: Worst tips from tech support

I once had my ISP CenturyLink (DSL) completely change my PPPoE credentials without telling me. Of course this broke my internet. Then I was told there was a service outage in my area and it would be resolved within 24 hours. Come to find out there was no outage, they just changed my credentials and …

Re: Strangest thing found on harddrives

You had a offline hard drive from an old flea market laptop, and you hired a lawyer and called the police ... overreacting a little bit. You could just zero out the drive or if you are too paranoid, then just break the drive, that's about it. Child pornography. ...And then I hired a lawyer to help …

Re: Strangest thing found on harddrives

I used to work for a fairly large pawn shop. I was in charge of "refurbishing" all of the electronics. People flat out didn't care what they left on their drives. The worst thing I ever found was illegal pornography. That was turned over to the police and that douchebag went to prison. Most of the …

Re: What is your unconscious motive for retro hardware ?

A lot of us have touched on personal nostalgia, which is of course one of (if not the) primary motivations. --- Thinking deeper about that reasoning, I think there may be a sub-element of that : namely, The Re-do, The Do-over . That is something we cannot do with our own lives. We cannot literally …

Re: Pentium OverDrive 83 on Asus 486SV2GX4 rev 2.0, problems with floppys and other storage devices

IMHO overdrives aren't worth it. They had a purpose when they were released but in this day and age it is entirely not worth it. The performance uplift you will get will be marginal and nowhere near a "real" Pentium. I can understand the draw in having your personal retro 486 "maxed" out.....but …

Re: What do you drive?

That sounds like a European problem. Around here, we don't have any specific taxes. We don't even have emissions tests anymore. The only advantage to having a small car is literally the savings on gasoline. And probably insurance. Other than that, we're free to drive what we want, and the gov't …

Re: What do you drive?

One thing that I am seeing in this thread is that while the car culture in other parts of the world differ wildly from how it is here in the Unites States.....there is certainly still a large group of people that are passionate about it, the world over. Pretty cool

Re: What do you drive?

don't you think cars are already obsolete? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r1mkllHzV8 Certainly not. Especially not where I live. Many people in this world don't live in ultra urban areas with public transportation. Plus people do have kids to transport, ever take a screaming toddler or 3 month …

Re: What do you drive?

My daily is a 2006 BMW 325i. I sometimes drive my wife's car to work, 2016 Kia Sportage EX. I also have two project cars, only one of which is currently driveable although it does need some work. 1982 Corvette. My long term (10 years plus) project car is currently undergoing a transmission swap and …
