Moreover the KX133 board was an Asus K7V Here's other test with Asus K7V: https://www.ixbt.com/cpu/thunderbird-800.html The difference is 3-5% (Sysmark2000 included).

I was really hoping my 400 would run at 600 but I can't get that stable regardless of voltage. It's nearly impossible for the Mendocino core. The integrated L2 cache can't work reliably after 550Mhz. The Katmai core can be overclocked up to ~650Mhz, because L2 is external and work at half-speed.

Managed to get timedemo score to 19.6 by setting the PCI divider to 1/1 PCI divider is important for Doom mostly and less for Duke Nukem 3D. In Quake, it improved my score from 19.3 to 19.4 fps. Doom notoriously relies heavily on local bus speed.

Quake 2 worked 30-40 minutes. Didn't tried anything else and not really interested after Incoming, Expendable and Quake 2. It won't make any difference.

Voodoo 3 has finally worked with 1.03 driver under Windows 98SE. The system is stable in Quake 2. Bonus: MDK2 timedemo has showed me ludicrous 5.84 fps average!

Skip S3 unless you want to load a tsr for full speed Not all S3 cards are affected though and it's only 1Kb of memory which isn't crucial for any 486 system anyway. BTW you won't even notice any performance drop unless you have powerful CPU like 5x86 150+ or Cyrix.

Speed is upper tier, compatibility is perfect Speed may fluctuate a bit from card to card, regardless of chip manufacturer. Some cards are clocked higher and will perform better.

Trial or error. Matrox - compatible up to Matrox G200. S3 - everything. 3dfx - everything. ATI - probably compatible up to Radeon 7000 PCI. Nvidia - compatible up to GeForce 4 MX or Quadro 4. SIS - probably everything. PowerVR - Kyro I PCI cards might be compatible. Trident - probably everything.

Best PCI card is the one, which can tolerate 50Mhz bus. S3 Virge, Nvidia, maybe Matrox Millenium II.
