I agree GF7 win7 drivers are not perfect, but neither is Catalyst 10.2 legacy Then why not use Windows XP with more appropriate drivers?

The gap between the power of the 5x86 160 and the CPU required in 1996 shouldn't be huge, but I don't have much experience to say this. There's a very huge gap with highres VESA modes.

Non-Intel FPU simply ignore the selection signal and always use CPU clock Somehow I doubt they can ignore anything, especially if they clocked by a different oscillator.

But it runs great from a 98SE DOS box in a P3 with PCI cards such as the Vortex 2, Live!, and Yamaha 7x4 I would say, Descent requires at least Pentium 200 to play comfortably in VGA or lowres VESA modes (320x400).

and there's a good chance of some nasty 44.1kHz-48kHz resampling. It's practically always involves 44.1kHz-48kHz resampling with PCI sound card.

Well, If I remember correctly I played at high detail but not maximum screen size, possibly one or two notches below Full+HUD. Memory is a tricky thing and I think you won't want to relive Descent DX33 experience =P

I finished Doom 1 on a DX33 Observation: Ah, period appropriate hardware masochism. But to be fair, you can tone down 3D settings and play it on "cigarette pack" screen more or less comfortably.

I played Descent 1 and Duke3D on a DX4-100 and they were just fine. Duke3D performance is acceptable. Descent has many problematic sections which are very slow on DX4, which is unacceptable on high difficulty.

Max single channel memory is 3GB, so 3 x 1GB No. One channel can address only 2GB. Dual channel will still work with three 1 Gb modules in asymmetric mode. It wasn't designed for CPU.

GeForce 7800 GTX vs Radeon X1800 XT 1. Nvidia has very sh*tty support for legacy cards under Windows 7 or newer OS. ForceWare 275.33. doesn't help it either. 2. Different VRAM size. While 1800XT should be faster under normal conditions, but only slightly.

If my reasoning is correct, could a 486 with an ISA sound card be followed immediately afterwards by a P4 with a PCI sound card No, late DOS games won't run good on any 486. Easy examples - Descent, System Shock, Blood. But you can use DOS compatible PCI card like Yamaha YMF724 in your P4 system.

worst that could happen is you try to install it in the socket wrong You can't install any Pentium CPU wrong side, including Pentium Overdrive. It's idiot proof, although not excessive force proof.

But I'm pretty sure I'll trade all of them for a XGI Volari Duo. I woudn't. While it certainly has interesting monetary value, it's practically useless for anything. Horrible chip with horrible drivers.
