The only two brands that differed from the reference designs were the Miro and Canopus branded cards Gainward, Quantum 3D. Not to mention that some boards had 110Mhz and 125Mhz rated memory, which is beneficial for overclocking.

So I've been doing some comparisons with my Iwill 430FX board with Voodoo 3 under Windows 98 SE. And apparently Pentium 75 with async cache is more or less equal to my Am5x86 180Mhz setup. Didn't saw tests, only rumors about how horrible that card was. But if we take into consideration that 9400CXi is slower than common Cirrus Logic and S3 805 cards (with just 486DX2), 9200 would be even worse.

. like S3 805, CL5428, Tridents.. Apparently Trident 9200 is quite horrible for everything. are pretty much the same in DOS. No, they aren't, but without powerful CPU it really doesn't matter.

For DOS performance pretty much every VLB/PCI card is good enough. No, not really. Some VLB cards are quite bad for high-end 486/Pentium Overdrive.

if you google for GA-586HX images, you may see several boards that have such chips plugged into the second tag socket. Revision probably matters. Or maybe it's early BIOS version bug.

found a while ago some 4Mb Elpida chips rated for 25ns/100MHz from ebay. While overkill in speed, they work perfectly with my VLB and PCI video cards, that take such memory. EDO chips won't work on old VLB cards.

I think additional TAG must match size of the one which is soldered on board. 256Kb COAST modules TAG usually won't match.

I managed to get my Am5x86 running at 150mhz using 3 x 50mhz. So this somewhat compensates for the lack of L2 Am5x86 150-160Mhz without L2 cache is more or less equal to 120Mhz 486DX4 with L2 cache.

Rare and supposedly very fast (64-bit memory access). Latter is wasted on 486 anyway, due to poor CPU performance. P.S. Aaaand it's gone. Someone was really looking forward to pimp their 486 VLB system.
