Best PCI card is the one, which can tolerate 50Mhz bus. S3 Virge, Nvidia, maybe Matrox Millenium II.

However, VGA modes are handled by Weitek 5186 that sits on ISA bus and thus the poor results in other tests. You can force Build engine games to use VESA 320x200 mode. It also will provide performance boost on normal cards.

Though I don't suppose you'd still find vulnerable ICH5 boards with working USB to protect. Easy. Any boards which were used in cases without front USB panel.

It all boils down to which CPU you use. With DX2-80 the difference between cards is negligible, but with AMD 5x86-160 it could be much more profound in some games. And not all top tier cards are on friendly terms with 40Mhz VLB bus.

Agreed but Asus was the worst of them. Of course they are. They were and still are the biggest motherboard manufacturer outside OEM.

they were notorious for blown chipset based USB ports. The problem is common for many ICH5 based boards, not just ASUS.

Depends on which 5x86 revision you have. ADW or ADZ? ADZ can work without heatsink.

Sidenote: I did some experiments with late Am486DX2-66V16BGC (ADZ with 2x/3x multiplier) trying to achieve 66Mhz front side bus and I must say it's not worth the effort. Even if I'll magically get 200Mhz capable AMD 5x86 CPU, I had to sacrifice cache and memory timings more. So overall performance …

I'd personally avoid SSD drives on pre-windows 7 setups. SSD drives like Intel X25-E don't do TRIM and don't need it really, like most SLC based drives. There's also utilities to force TRIM on older OS. And if that's not enough: TRIM is not required with sufficient over-provisioning.

Thanks for that but is not having jp16 going to be a problem for a K6-2+-550 If you look carefully, you will notice that JP16 is substituted by SW1 on early revisions. But revision 1.1 might be not compatible with K6Plus. Most likely will only require official BIOS update though. Anyway, the manual …

GA-5AA 1.1 is identical to 2.2 revision, when it comes to jumpers: Gigabyte GA-5AA revision 1.1, 2.2 and 3.2 differences Pretty much everything is labeled on PCB, so the manual is not required.
