My guess is that Intel could have sold ppro233’s if they only offered it in 256kb varieties, the bigger cache modules likely couldn’t clock any higher than 200 Not really. Is this a legit concern, or am I being overly paranoid? Yes, you are overly paranoid. LAPC and Voodoo 5 don't have heavy enough components or cooling on PCB to cause sagging.

You don't need to overclock FSB. Most if not all boards had 3.5x multiplier and Pentium Pro is unlocked.

Quake 2 is sensitive to I/O bus speed. In MDK2, equally clocked Pentium Pro is 40% faster.

The P4 was really just a product of its time Eh, not exactly. Similar CPUs were made before (AMD K6) and after (IBM PowerPC G5) Netburst release. All three were banking on SIMD and other specific optimizations to negate drawbacks of long pipeline.

I still have fully functional Chaintech motherboard with G-Luxon caps from capacitor plague era, which are considered to be incredibly crappy. All while I have two identical Gigabyte motherboards from the same era, with fancy Nichicon caps, which failed on spectacular level on both.
