The board should be able to drive the 866MHz chip. Either the chip is dead (which might have happened by your own hand) or the motherboard has issues. Have you tried updating the BIOS by any chance? Maybe there's an issue with detection of newer CPUs that prevents POST and got fixed in later BIOS. …

On older boards it's actually sometimes flashed in the EEPROM, mostly those settings are stored in volatile memory in the chipset or the RTC module though.

Depending on your BIOS version I'd suggest an update. BIOS ID NZ has "Shows the correct frequrncy as set by User Define" in its notes. Maybe this is the issue you're having.

I can't perform the transplant but I have two ideas: Ask ASUS wether they'll do it if you supply the socket with the board. (30€ is very fair!) Try locating a video game console repair shop near you and ask wether they'll do it if you supply the socket.

You can still force 4x in BIOS. If the system proves unstable again it would support (not prove) my theory. If it keeps running stable we can probably dismiss it. 😅
