the 250/100 zip still works from DOS with the drivers loaded in memory right? Yes, you only need to start GUEST.EXE to get instant access to the Zip drive from DOS.

Is there 8MB Virge DX? No. Only the VX and the Trio3D/2X have support for 8 MB. All other cards are limited to 4 MB (or even 2 MB in case of the MX). Not sure which cards you have exactly, but you mention S3 Trio. If you own one, go for a Trio64V+ with 2 MB. That's probably the best card you can …

I mean the RAM board. Check its tantalum caps. If there's a short, it will of course short the GND and +5V line on the mainboard once inserted.

Those Conner drives can get really hot, so you should mount it in a way that allows clearance of at least 1cm on all sides. I see lots of room inside the case to put the hard disk, but you would need to build a custom cradle to mount it anywhere there.

Bent pins on Voodoo cards, especially Voodoo2, are very common. No idea why, but I never had any other cards with bent pins - but every second Voodoo card I got so far had at least one.

That most likely happens when a program tries to access memory that it has no access to. Or if a 16-bit piece of code runs crazy, since Win9x does not offer memory protection for 16-bit code.
