8 GB is the limit of E-IDE with no LBA mode available. I don't think there are 486 mainboards out there that do LBA. You can get around by using a Disk Manager or by putting the XT-IDE BIOS inside the machine, e.g. by installing it into the boot ROM socket of a NIC.

If it's old and doesn't say "SDHC" on the box, chances are that it won't read cards larger than 2 GB. SDHC hit the market in 2006 (!), so no reader older than that is able to support them anyway.

That's an ordinary OPTi929-based card. The reference driver for that chip will do just fine.

That's normal, as Skyscraper already explained. Reason being that the spacing between the slots is fixed, but ISA cards face up, whereas PCI cards face down. So there's a clash at some point where you have only one bracket for two slots.

ATI 3D Rage Pro PCI w/svideo in, composite in, and TV out, and full memory expansion Mac version. That one won't work in a PC until re-flashed with a PC-compatible firmware. The S3 card is nice. 😀

The wire goes to the missing cap, so I doubt the wire makes any difference. Does it even work?

You really don't want to use old backup software on newer systems. They will most likely not be able to do a correct backup anyway. Remember Win9x was DOS-based with FAT16/32, while XP is NT-based with NTFS. Forcing a backup software for 9x to run on NT is a bad idea.

Last time I checked you already had to pay 40€ for a 5x86-100. There's a 50/50 chance that these run well at 120 MHz, however. From those I had, I kept the ones that run at 120 MHz and sold the rest. 😁

While DOOM technically runs on a 386SX, it's not playable. Stuff like Wolfenstein 3D or Wing Commander 1+2 are the most complex games you can play on that. The 386SX is limited by its 16-bit bus and an ISA VGA card doesn't help either. RAM is also quite slow with an SX. No idea about the Acer …

I DO know that it is officially not even GM compatible, since it has only 20 voice polyphony (GM requires at least 24). GM also requires Reverb and Chorus, which many cheap wavetables didn't have.
