You can not mix digital audio with a Y cable. I wouldn't recommend even trying it. Nothing bad will happen to the hardware, but the sound output may kill your speakers (or your ears at least 😉 ).

It actually lacks the RAM, the connector for a RAM expansion, and the ROM! That is, no hardware wavetable at all on the second one.

Most likely scaling artifacts. Please try running the game in a different resolution and report if the bars disappear.

You can cut the trace going to pin 12 of the VGA connector (doesn't matter where). That's what is used to switch the card into b/w mode. Modern monitors are using it for DDC instead, but anything apart from "not connected" will force the card to display b/w.

It's apparently not booting MS-DOS 7.1, but 6.x. You can not start Win 9x on MS-DOS 6.x. Start from the setup disk once and do a "sys a: c:" at the command prompt. After that, the problem should be gone.

It almost never does with OPL2/3 as well, as game music was not composed for FM - apart from the very first games to support AdLib only. I prefer CQM with reverb & chorus over OPL3 as well. It sounds very good. What you should avoid are OPL clones from OPTi and Analog Devices. Those *are* crap.

Got a nice pile of ISA cards today, including three VGA cards (TVGA9000, Chips, Cirrus Logic), two AWE64, and an ALS100+ based sound card with external OPL3 (wtf? The Plus should have that one integrated, no?)

For me, SD cards are more ubiquitous (less cost) than CF. I wouldn't recommend using SD cards as a hard disk replacement, as they are slow and have a very short life time. CF cards are much more durable/reliable. And, as already written, CF cards are native IDE/ATA, so there's no signal or protocol …
