FORMAT.COM should be fine. It has various options to check for bad tracks and such; just use the "/?" parameter to get all options listed.

Yes, that is done via jumpers on the mainboard. No idea which ones on the LX, though, as I only own a SPARCstation 5. But you should not have trouble finding the manual, I guess.

Does it beep when turning on? Also, a serial connection won't work unless you set the SPARCstation's serial port to RS-232. It's RS-423 by default, which won't work for a PC.

So it's not black and white as you wrote in your first post. Try a different PC with that monitor. Could be a broken wire in the VGA cable or a bad solder joint inside the monitor. Seems like there's no blue. I assume you already reset the monitor to factory settings?

Your monitor has DDC on pin 12. Your VGA card however is too old to know about DDC and uses pin 12 to detect a monochrome display instead, thus switching to b/w mode. Use a VGA cable that lacks pin 12 or remove it.

Or just use the file windows\dosstart.bat, which is there for that reason. It's even called automatically when you exit from Windows to DOS.

That's not the same, because you have no shielding to discharge any electric charge between the PC and the device you plug in when using a plastic i/o shield. But just as with ESD, people tend not to listen. It's just a word of warning. You are free to use a 3d-printed i/o shield if you don't care. …
