Depends on how far back you want to go. Everything for my Philips G7000 is original (quite simply because copying cartridges is way too much hassle). Have you tried to share the drive on the network then connect to that share using a more current machine and scan it that way. Probably quicker and safer than sending every file on the system out over the internet.

From what I recall Thinkpads have a recovery partition to restore to factory original state (assuming it hasn't been overwritten or the drive swapped out at some point). I believe pressing either F11 or the Access IBM button allows access to the recovery operation if pressed at start-up.

^ I think you can achieve the same result by turning off (and disabling) the themes service. That is how servers are configured (well, up to 2008 anyway not sure about newer versions) as the themes are rather pointless on those platforms resulting in that retro look.

I just switched from Avast as well for the reasons you stated. I moved to Panda which seems unobtrusive enough (bonus for legacy OS users as well as it still supports down to XP) and the machine seems a little quicker that it was before.
