Good project! You can try OpenBSD even in their last release, 6.4 . OpenBSD is the root of BSD UNIX like (FreeBSD, NetBSD, etc) and in my opinion is more UNIX than Linux. In any case you must try a Window Manager rather than Desktop Manager. Please, visit www.xwinman.org to more info. Good luck!
