first screen on the roof has sloped vents, then when you jump down you are facing a wall with sloped edge, FPS tanks even on fast FPUless NexGen (K6 precursor)

Im not familiar with mame/mess and its debuggability. Can you set traps on IO and see what is being accessed during IRQ6 when reading floppy files?

Some SSDs have problems with windows 9x, similar in a way to some CF cards not working in 286. No idea what the cause is. I wouldnt touch Windows ME in the first place 😀 the problem might be ME and not SSD.
