Interesting. Almost like TV has/had/was supposed to have ability to store calibration per detected input mode? This is how it works in LCD monitors, you can calibrate every individual input frequency separately. But TVs usually only support one input frequency, so this still doesnt sound right 😀

Situation 3 and Situation 4 give same 'error mask 1', means memtest86 is now useless at anything more than detection. I distinctly remember back in the day memtest showing expected and actual data for every encountered error so you could at least see how many bits got flipped.

I thought it could be a bad cap, but I'm thinking otherwise now because why would it be perfectly stable once it's finally booted windows? Because bad caps get better when warm. You can test this theory by unplugging it from power for a day, using hair drier to heat cpu power area and then power on

classic tired dried capacitors symptom, the more you try the warmer they get and thus get slightly healthier temporarily might be psu, but most likely mobo, or both

imo you didnt scrape enough soldermask off before bodging those tracks together. A good 2-3 milimeters each side is a good amount + wire across.

in both good and bad read cases DMA seems to be configured for only 512 byte reads and finishes correctly (TC -> interrupt) !?!?

As in my XT machines, the ISR also sets a flag really which is usually picked up in waiting loops. ... We could look into the other code that waits for the flag to be set you mean that OR byte ptr [offset DAT_0000_043e],0x80 / seek_status,int_flag ? CPU gets stuck way earlier inside the interrupt …
