CM500 is actually a CM32L with a CM300 (SC55 daughter board). It does not contain 32P hardware. This is why it lacks the Expansion card port of the real 32P and 64. It has a switch on the bank for selecting mode. It has a CM64 simulation mode which uses the sc55 hardware to replace the 32p. …

Unless its really cheap skip 500 and go for 1000/2000. 500 has no display and switching settings around via sysex is a pain. Especially if you want to use MU Basic (mu80) sound mode too.

I use a combination of Phonic AM55 and Yamaha UW500. This works well for me so i can mix and record analog soundeffects with digital toslink mu2000 music all in real time. The uw500 is also a great midi interface too

Tg100 can be switched to CM mode via the on screen menu. It sounds quite terrible though. TG100 is a fun tiny GM module to play with though if you get one cheap.

I always saw OPL4 as just the next budget pc sound card synth. Basically just an OPL3 with a simple Wave Table Rom bank, and a few megs of memory for additional samples. Don't think it was ever meant to compete with stand alone synths. Still a great sounding and fun to play with chip though. …
