Re: Unpack the blind box

[...] Just wish it had an OPL3 in it. Yesterday I found two OPL2s under my bed. Does that count? Not in a sock but in a static protection thingy, fortunately. I'd been soldering a bit earlier this week and tipped my spare chip box. I thought I'd found everything but clearly I missed those OPLs :P …

Re: Vesa Local Bus Video card VRAM

[...] I just want to put something together with the NOS MoBo and this card, they were found together in a storage closet so figured I might as well make something of them, a DOS 6.22/Win3.1 machine would be just fine I think? I lasted from 1995-early 1999 with a 1MB card in my Pentium 60 system, …

Re: Vesa Local Bus Video card VRAM

[...] So it's good as is for a 1mb card? Yes. VESA compatibility is as near perfect as you're going to get, performance is within 1% of highest you can have in DOS, and generally the build quality - and so image sharpness -was at least decent. They're not hugely loved or sought-after cards, but if …

Re: Vesa Local Bus Video card VRAM

Problem is the integrated DAC. It can only offer those higher modes interlaced, which is eye-melting. This is one of the best 1MB cards, but pretty pointless with 2MB. For 2MB, look for S3 chips (any), Cirrus Logic GD-5434 and Trident TGUI9440 for higher modes, or Tseng ET4000/W32P for interlacing …

Re: UMC UM85C418F RAM - 2MB possible + desirable?

It's probably only for an obscure interlaced mode like 1280x1024@8b interlaced, like with Cirrus Logic GD-542x chips. Bad news here - my 74HCT245N chips have arrived, I've removed the dead chip from my burnt-out card and soldered in the new one. It does now let the system boot - no more shorts - and …

Re: 486UL-P101 486 board works with 30 pin 256Kx4 edorams but not working with 72 pin 4MB-8Mb EDORAMS or mixed configs.

30 pin EDO RAM does not exist. OK, so what? Does it help me? If you want us to help you, it helps if we know exactly what components your are trying to combine. More specifically: very few 486 chipsets (and so motherboards) support EDO. So if you are trying to run 72p EDO SIMMs on them, that …

Re: First post about sound cards

That is one really nice card. Yamaha YMF724 cards are pretty common, but too often the cards are cheaply made. This one is clearly a quality product and the Toslink digital output is an outstanding feature. Cards with this chip are good early Windows 95/98 options as they have a very nice MIDI synth …
