128GB limit only applies to IDE drives connected to standard IDE controller, it is a limitation in the IDE driver of 9x as it is not LBA48 aware. USB storage, SCSI and SATA addon cards do not suffer from the 128GB limit and will all be usable up to 2TB size.

You need a board capable of 3.3V before you can use the 5x86. Chances are that your board is 5V only and that will fry the 5x86 sooner or later. Can you show a photo of the board ?

You pretty much always need a heatsink and a fan is highly advisable if the heatsink isn't particularly big. These chips do get pretty hot even at 3.3V.

"periodic noise" is not the right term to use, it actually is a 6.666% duty cycle square wave (and 6.25% on SEGA VDP PSG). LFSR is operated without feedback so one single bit circles through 15 stages (16 on VDP) the register is long.

Do the acetone test on them once they arrive. Soak a cotton swab in acetone and rub it on top of the chip, if markings start to disappear or the swap gets stained the parts are remarked. If you're lucky the part had its date code "refreshed", if you're less lucky the part was originally say 20MHz …

On all my boards 5V takes over when power is applied so battery is never left on 100% of the time, only charging of battery gets disabled (battery remains at its voltage). I haven't had battery ran out on any of the boards yet either.

Charging resistor needs to be removed (100...470ohm) from the charging circuit, once that is done there are no problems with installing a lithium cell or any other non-rechargeable cell in the machine.

You would need an address decoder that switches !CE lines of the two chips according to the topmost address line. It can be done with one 74 series logic chip. You probably will have to add a wait state for stable operation also.

You could repurpose the ADC jumper pins for line in connector but it uses DGND not AGND so there may be noise due to that.

Yeah, these are standard 1.27mm, bought from ebay. If the original chip was something else besides PLCC this would have been much more complicated, possibly to a point a new PCB is needed 🤣.

This is because there's moisture on the CRT socket on the neck board, you need to get the thing completely dry before things function right.
