It is quite likely the EEPROM needs a slightly different configuration to enable the RJ45 port after all the components are added back.

I have had some floppies that fail only hours after the magnet trick, which is still enough for the quick "I must install this software" kind of things I tend to use such floppies for. Some have remained working for longterm (months after).

There's a chance the USB connector of it has developed a bad solder joint which can lead to this sort of problem. I have had this happen to few of my sticks and fix was easy but main issue is those sticks are not meant to be openable and it takes effort to make them stay closed afterwards.

There just isn't any on that particular video BIOS version. Not all cards have such screens and some BIOSes manage to supress them even.

PCM1781 is a very good option, it takes RJ16 and I2S (selectable by a pin) and has a lot better analog performance than that Crystal DAC.

It will help to use a modern DAC chips, the output from YMF is standard RJ16 format that pretty much every DAC out there supports. No need to use the noisy and otherwise shitty Yamaha DAC or the Crystal one.

GF1 chip on GUS is manufactured by ICS and other ICS chips show clear lineage, with many similar or same bits. It is not surprising there are gonna be same sounds etc. as they likely all came from same team.

Toshiba Portege 3020CT has YMF719 in it and works good in DOS. Sound quality is ass though, lot of "thinking" noises.

All the pitches will be significantly lower with 16MHz crystal, MIDI input/output most likely stops working. Any software that expects correct timings is going to fail.

It should be 33.868800Mhz (44100 * 768) goes to YMF289, and MCLK output of the DAC (which is half, exactly what Crystal needs) goes into Crystal, and problem is solved.
