Other than even attempting Quake, your DX-33 experience matches my memory. I recall Duke3D studdering occasionally on a DX2-66. I tried Quake on my DX4-100 but I couldnt handle the 9 fps. It really wasn’t until I had a Cyrix P200 w/ Rendition Verite 2100 that I finally played thru GLQuake.

Given that likely none of your hardware will be supported by WinME, you might be better off trying this in a Virtual Machine. And just use DosBox for dos games.

You shouldn't really need a driver for DOS. There might be some helpful utilities like - S3VBEFIX - PC\MS-DOS TSR fix for S3 VESA 2.0 video BIOS You might want to look into patches for 3d acceleration too.

I don’t know anything about running win98 ontop of FreeDOS but in pure FreeDOS if you are setting up a dos compatible sound card you need to use the /sb switch on the emm386 emulation line in config.sys: device=jemm386.exe /sb Maybe win98 requires this as well?

Either the boot media is too slow and Dosbox doesn’t finish loading before my script kicks on and thinks DosBox was closed by user. In the future, I will extend this timeout. Or Something else. (File corruption, incompatible hardware?)

Realtek AC97 won’t work under DOS / FreeDOS in an real way (there might be a few media applications that support it, but you won’t be getting Sound Blaster compatibility). I think that's being a little extreme but I see your point. The first 3d Accelerator that Quake supported was Rendition Verite via VQuake. It doesnt even require Windows like GLQuake. It's not like most of the other big games didnt get patched with some support for other cards, it's just 3dfx did it …

Should be faster than any of your personal reference points. Looking at some benchmarks it seems slightly faster than the fastest Core2 Quads but can't touch the Lynnfield / Bloomfield quads.
